(CNS Local Life): Dog lovers Heather Holt and Morgan Olley last weekend held a unique fundraiser for One Dog at a Time (ODAAT), combining their skills to offer native plants and barbecue. Holt, who boasts a green thumb, and Olley, who knows his way around a grill, sold plants and sausages to those attending, raising more than $400 to support ODAAT’s efforts to help rescue and provide medical care for dogs and pups from the pound as well as eventually placing the canines in permanent homes.

Holt grew a variety of native flowering plants and shrubs ahead of the 28 April sale, offering aloe, ackee, sea purse, palms and papaya from the couple’s yard in South Sound. At the same time, Olley created “Snag Sambos”, sausages covered with spiced onions and wrapped in bread and banana leaves, for both people and pooches, said an ODAAT press release.

“I love gardening and I also love dogs,” Holt said of her efforts. “This is the first plant fundraiser I’ve held and it has proved to be really popular. Both our dogs are rescues, so we thought what a cool way to help other pooches.” Holt also offered advice to novice gardeners interested in her plants.

Caroline Johnston, ODAAT vice president, said of the fundraiser: “It’s fantastic that Heather and Morgan have organised and run an event for us. Next time, I’ll be bringing some of my plants to sell too, as it’s been so well received. I thought we might even run out of products to sell.”

To date this year, ODAAT has rescued and re-homed 40 dogs. There remain numerous dogs at the pound, and the animals are kept there as long as possible to give ODAAT time to find them homes, she explained.

“All our rescues are advertised via Facebook, so please like onedogatatime13 for updated photos and news of our re-homed dogs across the world,” Johnston said.

ODAAT also accepts items such as food, bowls, dog beds and other equipment, Johnston explained, adding, “On Sunday, we had a phone call from one of our supporters regarding a disabled dog wheelchair; we were delighted to accept the donation and are hoping to try it in the near future. It’s items like this that can make the difference to an injured dog or one who has had to have a leg amputated or had a serious operation.”
