Cayman’s sailors breeze through regatta
(CNS Local Life): More than 30 sailboats participated in the inaugural Cayman Islands Sailing Club spring regatta held 12-15 May. Among the vessels taking part were Cayman catboats and two youth Optimists fleets racing for marks and medals. The races started at 10am as the catboat fleet battled it out for the “Premier’s Cup” trophy, which was won by Kem Jackson sailing “Captain D”. The event was hosted within the open setting of the Cayman Islands Yacht Club in Governor’s Harbour.
The Opti dinghy teams started at noon with 21 boats rigged and ready on the water. The Green Fleet, with more than a dozen children (ages 8-12), encountered 15+ knots of breeze during their first-ever regatta. Beginner James Costa took all but one of eight fast races, but was followed closely by Kathryn Corkish and Lily McGrath.
The Gold Fleet of teenagers, who train and travel all year round, put on a show for spectators with Matheo Capasso taking first place, followed by George and Ava Hider in second and third, respectively.
At mid-day the J22 fleet arrived, coming in under spinnakers for the finish, with the crew of “Loki” winning the long-distance race.
