Minister’s message for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

(Minister for Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands Juliana O’Connor-Connolly): On 3 December, the world (united) to focus on creating sustainable and resilient communities for all on International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Locally, we will recognise this day on Monday, 4 December, by proudly wearing yellow and thinking about how we can create an inclusive community for all.
I implore that you take the time on this day to consider the plight of an individual who has different abilities. Even if you have had a temporary ailment, such as a broken leg or arm, you have gotten a small taste of what may be someone’s everyday struggle.
As minister for several subject areas that constantly need to consider the needs of all stakeholders of varying abilities and needs, I am aware that it is a multi-faceted issue, and sometimes it may prove more expensive to be inclusive or accessible, but all humans matter and they all deserve to live dignified lives with access to public resources.
As a Christian society, it is our responsibility to ensure our neighbour is cared for and provided with the opportunity to maximise his or her potential. Investing in creating an inclusive society is investing in the development of the human capital in the Cayman Islands. By working together, Government and the private sector can develop programmes and infrastructure that provide full participation of all individuals in our society.
