Athletes named for Commonwealth Games
(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s team for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has been chosen, with 22 athletes headed to Australia for the 4-15 April Games. The team members represent seven sports – athletics, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, shooting, squash and swimming. The XXI Games marks the 11th time Cayman will be participating in the international sporting event in which more than 6,600 athletes from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete this year.
The Cayman Islands first took part in the Commonwealth Games in 1978 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Over that time Cayman athletes have come home with two medals, both in athletics. In 2002 in Manchester, England, Kareem Streete-Thompson earned a bronze medal in the men’s long jump and in the 2010 Games in Delhi, India, Cydonie Mothersill won a gold medal in the 200m.
