Charity event honours Kirkland Nixon
(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics committee (LETR Cayman Islands) is organising the first annual Kirkland Nixon Memorial Fire Truck Pull to pay tribute to the former fire chief, who died last month. The event, set for Saturday, 26 May, from 9am-1pm at Grand Harbour Shopping Centre, will benefit Special Olympics Cayman Islands (SOCI).
The committee consists of officials from the RCIPS, HM Customs, the Department of Immigration, the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) and (SOCI). The pull will raise money for SOCI as it prepares for the Special Olympics National Games which take place 3-8 June, stated a press release. The event is also intended to raise awareness about the Special Olympics and SOCI initiatives.
The pull will involve teams of 12, representing both government departments and corporate entities, as they compete to see who can pull a fully loaded fire truck 15 feet in the fastest time. There will be an overall winner in each of the two categories, and a final “pull off” where the top two teams compete for the annual trophy.
“As we came together this year to relaunch the LETR, our former Fire Chief, Mr Kirkland Nixon, passed,” said Rodney Rivers of the CIFS. “He was always a big supporter of the Special Olympics and also arranged fire truck pulls during his tenure, and we believe this is the perfect way to pay tribute to him. This event mirrors his values of service to community.”
LETR Cayman Islands, which is a local branch of the worldwide LETR organisation, has been dormant for the past few years, and is being relaunched with this fire truck pull, with other activities to follow.
“It is a pleasure to see the Law Enforcement Torch Run get back up and running after being on a bit of a hiatus over the last few years,” said RCIPS Inspector Ian Yearwood, who is interim chairperson of the committee. “These activities allow us the opportunity to join together as law enforcement agencies to support a very worthy cause.”
SOCI chair Adrian Lynch said of the event: “All of us here at Special Olympics Cayman are delighted to see the revival of the Torch Run and Fire Truck Pull. We really appreciate the support of our local law enforcement agencies in helping to raise awareness and funds for our Special Olympics athletes.”
