Olive Miller

(CNS Local Life): At this year’s Queen’s birthday celebration, set for Saturday, 9 June, Olive Miller will be the sole recipient of an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) medal, 40 years after receiving her Member of the British Empire (MBE) honour.

She is being recognised for her lifelong commitment to community services, including founding the Girls Brigade, helping to open the Cayman Islands High School and Pines Retirement Home, as well as serving as the government’s first information officer, stated a press release.

The public is invited to attend the festivities, which will mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 92nd birthday.

A parade by the uniformed services will precede the awards ceremony. The event takes place just outside the Legislative Assembly building and is to recognise new recipients of Queen’s Honours.

It was announced in January 2018 that Miller would receive her honour. Betty Baraud and Bill Hrudey were also honoured as MBEs. Dr Hrudey received his award, for work promoting science, at an investiture ceremony held early this year prior to his passing. Baraud will travel to the UK to receive her award, for her volunteering and fundraising efforts.

The parade and ceremony start at 9:30am, but guests and the public should be in place by 9am, stated the press release. In the event of rain, the ceremony will take place inside the George Town Town Hall starting at 10am.

Officials note that a dress code of semi-formal daywear (or your Sunday best) is enforced for these celebrations. Hats are optional.
