Monster takes over Pirates Week entertainment
(CNS Local Life): Monster Media has won the bid to run the bar and entertainment aspects of the street dances at the 41st annual Pirates Week Festival set for November this year. The Tourism Attraction Board (TAB) put out a request for proposal in April after the government cut funding for the festival, and to maintain a “high quality of entertainment for residents and visitors”.
Monster, a local promoter and entertainment company, aims to work with a “strong line up of local talent and top Caribbean artists”, explained managing director Kenny Rankin in a press release, saying he was “excited for the overall collaboration” with the Pirates Week Festival.
“Securing a partner for the street dances was essential to sustaining the quality of the festival’s entertainment, and to maintaining the overall feasibility of coordinating a national event of this scale,” said TAB director Patrick Thompson.
The decision to sell the street dances (bar and entertainment services only) was due to both a decrease in government funding for the festival, and an effort to continue providing a high quality of entertainment for residents and visitors, the TAB said in the press release.
Also new this year, admission to the entertainment at the Friday, 9 November, street dance will be by ticket only. All other aspects of the festival will remain free including the steel pan competition, mock invasions, live entertainment, talent contests, parades, fireworks, and cultural demonstrations.
The official dates for the festival this year are 2-4 November in Cayman Brac, 8-12 November in Grand Cayman, and 16-18 November in Little Cayman.
The District Heritage Committees will again be hosting all aspects of the individual district days, which will take place from 2-8 November in Grand Cayman. The Pirates Week Office will provide sponsorship to the committees to fund their district floats, festival queen costumes, and any promotional support needed.
