(L-R) Deputy Governor Franz Manderson presents the July Employee of the Month award to Tyrone Yen of the National Archive, with Portfolio of the Civil Service Chief Officer Gloria McField-Nixon

(CNS): General records assistant Tyrone Yen of the Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA) has been named the top civil servant for July. During his 17 years of public service, his employers said that Yen has maintained a high calibre of customer service, and displayed professionalism in all interactions with clients.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson set up his Employee of the Month award to recognise civil servants who exceed expectations and serve as role models.

CINA called Yen its “most practical and innovative” employee, who helped to streamline recordkeeping at the archive when it had reached capacity in the storage of semi-active records. While other public agencies use warehouses for alternative storage, this solution would not have been ideal to protect and preserve government’s information assets.

Yen assisted with developing and implementing an alternate recordkeeping strategy, which managed off-site storage as a satellite facility under the care and control of the National Archive, and included the marriage of technological advances and best practices for records and information management.

Noting Yen’s accomplishments, Manderson lauded his contribution to devising a practical solution to deliver recordkeeping services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

“You have demonstrated that the implementation of simple and practical strategies can make a difference,” Manderson said, when presenting Yen with his award. “Thank you for demonstrating such a remarkable level of performance and commitment to the Cayman Islands Government.”

Chief Officer in the Portfolio of the Civil Service Gloria McField-Nixon also applauded Yen’s professionalism. “What is even more telling than the ability to have a good idea, is the commitment and perseverance to see it through to completion.

“Mr. Yen is an example of personal sacrifice as he has continued to oversee the project, even in the midst of personal challenges when an immediate family member suffered life-threatening injuries after an accident. We owe him a debt of gratitude,” she said.

Yen said the unexpected award would inspire and encourage him further to provide his best service to the archive and thereby to the Cayman Islands Government. “This is definitely one for the team,” he acknowledged, accepting the award with “humility”.
