Grants assist 11 students with university studies
(CNS): A grant programme, funded by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), is helping to support 11 students in studying overseas for their first tertiary degrees. Of the recipients of the John Gray Memorial Fund grants, seven are receiving the assistance for the first time.
The NCVO will continue to support these first-time awardees throughout their degree course providing that they maintain high averages. The students who were given funding are studying a wide range of courses including biology, music, engineering, special education, architecture and animal science.
The grant is named in honour of the late Rev. John Rae Gray, a former NCVO council and executive committee member, United Church minister and high school principal. Funds are granted each year to young Caymanian students who wish to attend college or university but have insufficient funds to cover their living expenses.
The “top-up” fund and assistance is intended for expenses associated with pursuing a degree such as for books, accommodation or transportation and helps those who may have funding for tuition through government grants or other means but not for additional expenses. This year a total of US$22,000 was distributed to applicants.
The NCVO is an independent, non-profit, charitable organisation dedicated to the care, education and well-being of children and families in need of support in the Cayman Islands.
NCVO committee members Charles Farrington, Elizabeth Schofield, Janice Wilson, Alta Solomon and Olive Miller reviewed the applications. Grant recipients are encouraged to become involved in their community through volunteer work.
