Swimmers to hit the pool for Stingray fundraiser
(CNS): The Stingray Swim Club (SSC) will be holding its third annual swim-a-thon on Friday, 9 October. The Big Swim serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit organisation, which will mark its 20th anniversary next year.
Swimmers will have two hours to complete as many laps as possible. In that time the SSC hopes to raise $20,000. Noting that is a lofty goal, the swim club, which has members ranging from 6–21 years old, said it can be achieved if everyone who hears of the event just donates one dollar.
The club trains at the Lions Aquatic Centre, working closely with the Cayman Islands Government swim programmes. The SSC said it is committed to creating an atmosphere which develops committed, disciplined athletes with skills which will serve them well in all walks of life, not just in the pool.
Last year, Stingray swimmers were members of the CARIFTA girls 11-12 4 x 100m free relay gold medal teams – one of which set a CARIFTA record — and the boys 15-17 4 x 200m free relay bronze team. They also brought home seven individual medals. The club sent swimmers to the Island Games, FINA World Championships and Junior Commonwealth Games. These athletes train more than 20 hours every week, while also maintaining their grades at school.
Funds raised at the swim-a-thon will be used for overseas travel, a scholarship programme and equipment for swimmers and for the pool. In an effort to make all levels of competitive swimming affordable to all participants while still maintaining a professional atmosphere and keeping costs down for members, the club must raise funds throughout the year.
If any organisation, individual or company wants to make larger contributions, the SSC can either pick up the donation or receive the money in person at the event on 9 October.
