Get into the Christmas spirit at the National Gallery
(CNS): The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is promoting creativity for the holidays by hosting two festive art workshops as well as the popular Christmas Artisan Fair, all coming up next month.
The holiday workshops, led by experienced NGCI instructors, will cover creative techniques and tricks to produce one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments. Workshops include a shatterproof-ornament painting class for families and a ceramic-glazing class for adults.
Course fees cover materials and specialised instructors, and will help support free admission to the National Gallery.
The annual NGCI Christmas Artisan Fair is set for 9 December, from 6pm-8pm, in the lower exhibition hall. The fair offers a selection of unique gift ideas from 20 artists featured in the gallery’s gift shop. The event includes afterhours viewing of the latest photography exhibition, “Now & Then”; live music by Red, White and Blues; special discounts for NGCI members; and mulled wine and mince pies. Admission to the fair is free and all are welcome.
For more information about the fair and to RSVP, email NGCI events or call 945-8111.
Three Girls and a Kiln, a collective of three artists who create ceramics, paintings and upcycled/repurposed gifts, is running the Christmas glazing workshop, scheduled for Saturday, 5 December, from 11am-2pm. The cost is $80 per person ($75 for NGCI members). Teens through adults are welcome to attend.
Participants will learn creative glazing techniques and use these to make their own Christmas ornaments. Completed pieces will be fired and ready for collection at the National Gallery on 12 December.
Kara’s Glass Garden will be running the other workshop on Christmas ornaments. Each student will receive four shatterproof ornaments to which they can add a touch of their own style. The 2 1/2-hour course takes place Saturday, 12 December, from 10:45am to 1:15pm. The fee is $60 ($55 for NGCI members), with everyone aged 7 or older welcome to attend.
Originally specialising in hand-painted glassware, owner Kara Julian’s portfolio now includes other decorative, yet functional, home-accessory pieces such as house signs and painted furniture.
