National Trust evenings offer something for everyone
(CNS): The National Trust has two special events coming up, one offering family entertainment and the other an evening of dinner and dancing. As a part of the National Trust’s “Families in the Wild” programme, the organisation has partnered with local environmentalist Laura Butz to create the second annual Earth Hour event, set for Saturday, 19 March from 6:00pm until 9:30pm at the Dart Family Park, South Church Street.
Next month, the first annual Dinner in White will be held Saturday, 9 April, inspired by the Diner En Blanc franchise held all over the world, with registered guests learning the secret dinner location upon arrival at the event.
“Earth Hour: Picnic in the Dark” will take place in the park’s amphitheatre and will feature a professional storyteller, a screening of Dr Seuss’ The Lorax and acoustic performances from local musicians. Families are encouraged to bring picnic essentials including blankets, pillows, flashlights, lanterns and insect repellant. Light refreshments will be available and guests can also bring their own snacks.
The Cayman Islands Astronomical Society will be on hand to assist stargazers who want to view Jupiter and other heavenly bodies. There will also be a short presentation on the National Trust’s new carbon-reduction programme, “Island Offsets”, which will explain how climate change affects the Cayman Islands.
Earth Hour is an internationally recognised event, created by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. All around the world, on 19 March, from 8:30pm-9:30pm, participating countries will turn off non-essential lighting and unite in solidarity raising awareness for the planet.
The Trust invites the public to participate in this global movement by pledging to turn off non-essential lighting for Earth Hour. In addition, the Trust encourages the public to go beyond that gesture and consider unplugging any electronic devices that are not needed.
“Our ‘Families in the Wild’ programme is a series of weekend activities designed by the National Trust to encourage families to get outdoors and enjoy nature,” said Danielle Watler, marketing manager for the Trust. “The overall aim of Earth Hour is to raise awareness about climate change and work towards reducing the world’s carbon footprint by lowering our energy consumption.”
All proceeds of Cayman’s second Earth Hour event will benefit the National Trust’s conservation work.

At “Dinner in White”, guests dressed all in white will meet at West Indies Wine Company in Camana Bay at 6pm and then get taken by bus to an intimate dinner in a public space decorated by Celebrations. After dining in a family-style setting, guests will dance the night away under the stars to a band and DJ.
Tickets, which cost CI$150, include a three-course dinner, welcome drink and first glass of red or white wine at dinner. Bottle service is optional when registering online and there will be a cash bar throughout the evening. Epic Day Entertainment and newly formed marketing and events consultancy Out of the Blu Marketing have partnered to create Dinner in White.
Tickets are available from the Epic Day office in The Strand shopping centre or the National Trust office in Dart Family Park, South Sound.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the National Trust’s educational work which teaches thousands of students the importance of environmental conservation and historic preservation.
“The Trust is excited to be a part of this unique event. We hope the community will consider becoming members of the Trust, because membership fees help us preserve the environment and historic sites across all three Cayman Islands,” said Christina Pineda, Trust executive director.
