Cayman cycles for charity
(CNS): Cayman’s cyclists peddled for a good cause at the 2nd Annual Century Ride, raising $4,000 for Feed Our Future Cayman Islands. More than 100 people completed the ride, which was organised by the Cayman Islands Cycling Association (CICA).
The course took participants through West Bay, George Town, South Sound, East End, Queens Highway (twice), Rum Point and back to West Bay, covering a total distance of 105 miles each. Together the group totalled almost 12,000 miles, or nearly halfway around the world.
CICA president Craig Merren said, “The ride was very successful and surpassed our expectations. As a result, we have already started planning next year’s event and plan to add other components, including a kids’ ride at Camana Bay as well as an off-road cycling event.”
Feed Our Future Chairwoman Stacey VanDevelde thanked all involved. “It was a powerful demonstration of our community rallying together to combat hunger in Cayman’s schools,” she said.
“Riding enthusiasts of all levels came out in droves to support our most vulnerable, our children. We sincerely appreciate the support of the sponsors, volunteers and riders who contributed to this event’s success and look forward to advancing our partnership with the Cayman Islands Cycling Association and its members.”
Based on the support for this year’s ride, the association hopes this family-friendly community event will become a fixture on the cycling scene.
CICA treasurer Raul Nicholson-Coe added, “We are proud to support Feed Our Future because of the important social need that they are fulfilling by providing nutritional meals to the less fortunate within our community. The funds raised from this event will provide almost 600 meals to these kids.”
