Cayman artist takes part in Caribbean creative event
(CNS): Simon Tatum of the Cayman Islands has joined 11 other artists from throughout the region to participate in Caribbean Linked IV in Oranjestad, Aruba, which runs until 23 August. For the programme, 12 people from around the Caribbean are convening to produce new work and mount an exhibition, which will open at Ateliers ’89 on Sunday, 21 August.
This annual residency will again allow the participants to be exposed to the practices of other emerging Caribbean artists and engage with acclaimed international curators, providing an opportunity to strengthen regional and professional connections while fostering broader cultural understanding.
Also facilitating this exchange are the nightly “Black Box” artist talks at Ateliers ’89, with the last two taking place today (15 August) and 18 August, where the artists will be expanding on their practices. These talks are free and open to the public, and are also being streamed live on the Caribbean.tv Facebook page.
In addition to Tatum, who is supported by the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, the other artists participating this year are Frances Gallardo (Puerto Rico), Travis Geertruida (Curacao), Charlie Godet Thomas (Bermuda), Nowé Harris-Smith (The Bahamas), Dominique Hunter (Guyana), Tessa Mars (Haïti), Oneika Russell (Jamaica), Shanice Smith (Trinidad), Laura de Vogel (Aruba) and visiting master artist Humberto Diaz (Cuba). This year’s writer-in-residence is David Knight Jr (US Virgin Islands), co-founder of Moko Magazine.
Visiting artists who are lending support to Ateliers ’89 during the residency are Robin de Vogel (Aruba) and Katherine Kennedy (Barbados). Specially invited curators include María Elena Ortiz, associate curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Pablo León de la Barra, curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum for the Latin American phase of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative.
Caribbean Linked is an initiative by Ateliers ’89, ARC Magazine and The Fresh Milk Art Platform.
