Students make a difference with book drive
(CNS Local Life): A book drive held by students at Cayman Prep and High School collected more than 1,900 books that have been donated to the charity Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE) to help with their numerous initiatives. The drive, which took place the end of the last school year, involved the high school’s Key Club and primary school’s student council members.
One of the literacy initiatives that will benefit from the donation is LIFE’s partnership with the Ministry of Education to establish libraries for every government school classroom.
Brad Wilson, the ministry’s literacy specialist, said of the donation, “It’s wonderful that the Cayman Prep Key Club and the primary school student council took the time to organise, advertise and sort through all the high quality books they were able to collect from the community.
“The resources are going to go a long way to help support the joint literacy initiatives that LIFE and the ministry are currently running.”
LIFE executive director Marilyn Conolly thanked the students for partnering in her organisation’s mission to support and promote literacy across the Cayman Islands. “These donated books are the foundation for much-needed classroom libraries and reflect the charitable spirit of young people making a difference locally,” she said. “It is wonderful to see students supporting other students, and lifting each other up as a community.”
With the start of the 2016/17 school year, the books are being distributed to government schools, starting with those most in need.
