Former Olympian to speak before marathon
(CNS Local Life): Jeff Galloway, world-renowned runner and founder of the “Run Walk Run” method of distance training, will be the special guest at the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, set for Sunday, 4 December. Galloway, 71, who has been running for more than 50 years, will give a general talk on his experiences when participants in the marathon pick up their informational packets the day before the race.
He will also be offering paid classes on his training methods where people can receive personalised instruction on running drills, and be able to ask individual questions.
Galloway was a member of the 1972 US Olympic team, competing in the 10,000 metre event. He remains a competitive athlete, writes a monthly column for Runner’s World magazine and has written several books on training.
“As the race has grown, we’ve tried to develop the ‘Packet Pick Up’ event, and make it more informational for the runners,” said co-race director Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding. “It’s no longer a matter of coming, getting your packet and leaving, though there are a number of runners who do that. There are many participants who want to hang around, and socialise and talk about the race happening the next morning.”
She added that the pick-up event has taken on an “expo feel”. enabling more runners to engage with the race and inspire non-runners to begin training.
“Having Jeff Galloway join our pre-race speaker line-up is very exciting and we know he will be a great motivating force for our runners to experience before their race,” Kelly said.
Galloway will speak at 1pm on 3 December at the Westin Grand Cayman.
Registration for the marathon, half marathon, four-person relay, CUC High School Challenge, the Kids Fun Run and Galloway’s class is open online at the Cayman Islands Marathon website
