Monina Thompson named new tourism ambassador

(CNS Local Life): John Gray High School student Monina Thompson debated her way to winning the Tourism Speak Off and becoming the 2016-17 tourism ambassador. The Ministry and Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Cayman Islands Tourism Association hosted the competition, held 29 November, which encourages tourism awareness among high school students from a local and international perspective. As part of her prize package, Thompson also won $1,000.
The competition has been a part of the DoT’s local tourism awareness programme since 2003. The initiative also assists young students in developing useful communication, reasoning and public-speaking skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
All the competitors, including the other three students – Amanda Ferguson and Gabriella Ritch from Layman E. Scott High School and Theola Williams from Clifton Hunter High School – addressed a variety of topics including branding and creating flow events.
Thompson will have the opportunity to participate in DoT and tourism industry events and also in the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s youth congress, to be held in Grenada in 2017, where she will be competing against other tourism ambassadors or junior tourism ministers from across the region.
