YMCA offers after-school programme

Available for students ages 5 to 12, the programme will provide a variety of active learning opportunities, designated homework time and recreational activities.
Long-serving East End MLA John McLean dies
(CNS Local Life): Former MLA John McLean, who represented the district of East End in the Legislative Assembly from 1976-2000, died Saturday, 24 August, at the age of 69, after a short illness. During his long political career he also served on the Executive Council, which was the precursor to Cabinet.

Alex Panton Foundation seeks ‘youth ambassadors’
(CNS Local Life): The Alex Panton Foundation (APF) is launching the Youth Ambassador Programme (YAP), aimed at promoting interpersonal and life skills, and inspiring friendships among youth in Cayman. An introductory session is scheduled for Saturday, 31 August, from 1pm-4pm at the skate park in Grand Harbour. Students aged 12-16 are welcome to participate.
Prison officer named Chevening Scholar
(CNS Local Life): Prison officer Tamekia Young has received a Chevening Scholarship, one of 1,500 people worldwide handpicked for the award. The supervisor in the rehabilitation unit at HMP Northward will be using the scholarship to study for a master of science degree in addiction at King’s College London beginning next month.
FOI analyst named top employee for July
(CNS Local Life): Freedom of Information (FOI) analyst Nadira Lord has been named the Cayman Islands Government Employee of the Month for July, receiving her award last week. Lord, who works in the FOI unit of the Cabinet Office, received the award for “delivering an outstanding customer experience by being an exceptional team player”.
