Participants in the Firecracker Relay

(CNS): The Stingray Swim Club (SSC) celebrated the 4th of July, a nod to US coaches David Pursley and Tim Leonhart, with its first-ever Firecracker 1500m Relay. Each relay team comprised participants from every age group, with senior swimmers – John Bodden and Haley Roulstone, Christian Glidden and Sam Bailey, Cole Morgan and Sarah Jackson – serving as captains for each team.

The fun relay – reminiscent of a NASCAR event, with competition names including “Cleaning (the Car)”, which required brushing teeth; “Refuel”, drinking juice; and “Drag Race”, putting on a sweatshirt, jeans and shoes in the middle of the race – had something for everyone, with both swimmers and spectators enjoying the proceedings.

At the end of the relay, there was a potluck refreshment table and a chilli cook-off, with entries from the two coaches, parent Adrien Royston and swimmer Bodden, who took the top prize. The club is looking forward to an even-more entertaining 2016 Firecracker Relay with swimmers going for full effect and creativity in the activities, as well as speed in the pool.
