Interested in getting cannabis oil

| 06/09/2017

The FDA just admitted cannabidiol (CBD) is beneficial and it is legal in the US to sell and ship cannabis oil containing CBD. Does anyone on the island sell it? If not, would Cayman customs allow it to be imported?

Auntie’s answer: A related question has come up before concerning insurance for treatment with CBD (see Patient looking for CINICO to cover cannabis oil). I recommend you take a look at that column and check the included link to a CNS story on a local hospital dispensing the oil.

To summarise, though, physician-selected patients who live in Cayman can get prescriptions for the oil, which is being manufactured in Canada by an authorised licensed producer of prescription-grade cannabis oil and distributed by a Caribbean company.

The prescribing of the oil is in its initial stages in Cayman and there is a limited supply. But you can’t import it on your own and need to have a doctor sign off on it for your use here.

Snake oil. Recent studies have all pointed to cannabis oil having no therapeutic benefit.

The two recent Veterans Administration studies published in August this year indicates there was at best “low quality” evidence to support arguments that there were any benefits for pain treatment or PTSD treatment.

      Name one of them….

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol ) and CBD (Cannabidiol) are the two best-known cannabinoids.

CBD Oils do not contain THC. CBD oil is legally available. Just go online or to a store and buy it.

Marijuana oil – THC Oil and Cannabis oil. Three names that in most cases refer to the same product. Marijuana oil is made from (medicinal) marijuana (as the word already suggests) and the oil therefore contains THC. Marijuana oil is NOT legal to buy.

Both THC and CBD oils are used for medicinal purposes.

CBD is legal within the EU and the USA.

The question remains: Can one purchase CBD oil that contains no THC and bring to the CI or import via a mail order? This has nothing to do with Cinico or doctors or prescriptions. It is sold as over the counter supplement in Europe and the USA.

The only snake oil on this island is what your preachers sell you on the weekend at church. False promises and exaggerated claims…

Some doctors will prescribe and others will not even entertain the conversation and quickly force dangerous pharmaceuticals down your throat. Thankfully, my doctor is a believer of the medicinal cannabis oil and made it available for me as soon as it hit the shelves on island. The down side is that it is a bit expensive, CI$320 for 60ml and the insurance companies are making you jump through hoops and hurdles to have this medication covered, yet there is no questions asked to cover opiates. If you have Cayman First for insurance, you can forget having it covered.

CBD has been researched by many people worldwide, including NCCIH. It is arrogant and close minded to call CBD oil in general snake oil. CBD has had many medicinal effects that are positive. Although research has not gone on for long enough to look at the long term effects of it’s use, as it stands with our current research CBD along with Cannabis as a whole have shown that it is a very promising compound in terms of medicinal benefits.
I do not deny that an oil made by one company may work better than an oil made by another company but when it is made correctly for a certain purpose. For example the ‘Journal of Experimental’ Medicine reported that CBD can significantly reduce chronic inflammation and pain in some trials.
I do not claim to be an expert on the topic by any means but I have not commented on the topic without doing secondary research. I would love to be able to do primary research or at least see it take place on our island but that would prove quite a task with our current legal rules.
I am open to other opinions and would encourage everyone claiming this compound to be snake oil to prove that to me, but if you have not done any research I would highly recommend that you avoid posting public comments on a more factual than opinionated topic.
