Open-water event goes swimmingly
(CNS Local Life): The open-water swim season continued recently with the annual Butterfield 800m Sea Swim, which attracted 128 competitive and non–competitive swimmers. The event, held 9 June and organised by the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association (CIASA), took place at Governor’s Beach with 51 female and 77 male swimmers participating.
First across the line was John Bodden (9:42), followed by Liam Henry (9:48) and Alex Dakers (9:49). The first-place female finisher was Lauren Hew (10:25). Medals were awarded to the top three winners in several age categories.
Despite some light showers, the sea conditions remained calm on Seven Mile Beach, stated a CIASA press release. Participants included members of the Cayman Islands National Swim Team, which recently had a successful showing at the CARIFTA Swimming Championships; members of the national development team; triathletes; Special Olympics athletes; and masters swimmers.
“The Butterfield Sea Swim was a great event. It was an exciting race with a very high turn-out today” said Duke Sullivan, meet director. “CIASA is grateful to the many volunteers that made this sea swim a success, and we look forward to many more years of contributing to this popular event.”
