Cayman’s first governor turns 100
Governor Roper stands next to Athel Long at his birthday celebration
(CNS Local Life): Governor Martyn Roper was one of the guests at the Pines Retirement Home who this week helped celebrate the 100th birthday of Cayman’s first governor, Athel Long. In both a tweet and Facebook post on 2 January, Roper congratulated Long and said he was honoured to take part.
He said on Facebook he was “delighted to attend Athel Long’s 100th birthday party at the Pines.” Roper acknowledged Long’s place as the first governor of the Cayman Islands, noting that he was the fourteenth to hold that position.
Noting Long was a decorated war veteran, Roper said it was a “great honour to meet such a remarkable man”.
