Cuba, Mexico take top spots at NORCECA beach volleyball
(CNS Local Life): Cuba’s women team of Maylen Deliz and Leila Martínez took their second consecutive title on this year’s NORCECA beach volleyball tour, beating Brittany Hochevar and Carly Wopat of the US in a close match, 21-18 and 21-19, on Sunday, 29 April, at Seven Mile Public Beach. In the men’s final, Mexico (Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros) denied Cuba (Sergio Reynaldo Gonzalez Bayard and Luis Enrique Reyes Rodriguez) a second gold, defeating that team 21-18 and 21-14.
The US also took a second spot on the women’s podium, placing third, and Nicaragua collected bronze on the men’s side.
Jessica Wolfenden and Gandolfi Stefania finished highest among Cayman’s entries, placing ninth among the women’s teams, with Ileann Powery and Marissa Harrison coming in 13th. On the men’s side, Casey Santamaria and Jesse Parham were 10th, with Richard Campbell and Nathan Dack finishing 17th.
Cayman’s two men’s teams also competed against squads from the US Virgin Islands in the Continental Cup, losing both matches in straight sets.
This was Cayman’s 10th time hosting the event, which featured 36 teams from 16 countries including the home squads, playing more than 80 games over the three-day event.
