Cayman finishes strong at Island Games
(CNS Local Life): Cayman finished with a flurry of medals on the last day of competition, Friday, 12 July, at the NatWest International Island Games in Gibraltar to bring its final total to 30. The men’s basketball team, which easily won all five of its group and elimination games, beat Saaremaa 75-63, for its only real test, to take gold Friday and repeat as champions from the 2017 Games.
Cayman also outplayed the competition in squash, completing its clean sweep of golds with a final victory in the team event. Earlier, Jake Kelly and Julian Jervis, and Jade Pitcairn and Elilidh Bridgeman took doubles gold; and Marlene West and Cameron Stafford earned top of the podium in mixed doubles after they each took singles gold.
Carl Morgan earned gold as well on the final day, with a leap of 15.33m in men’s triple jump, a whopping 1.13m ahead of the silver medallist from Jersey.
In shooting, Ales Cevela took silver in the IPSC standard division to add to his bronze the day before in the IPSC open division.
Cayman’s women earned silver in the 4x100m relay in 47.99, only .05 seconds behind Aland’s gold-medal finish. In the men’s 4x100m relay, Cayman took bronze in 42.03 seconds, edging Gibraltar out of the medals by just .01 seconds, and only .04 seconds behind silver, won by Jersey, and .12 seconds behind gold, taken by Guernsey.
The men also earned a medal in the 4x400m relay, placing second in a time of 3:13.77, just .26 seconds behind Guernsey.
Cayman placed eighth overall in the medal standings among the 22 islands competing at the games, with 11 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze.
