(CNS Local Life): The “Ready, Set, Learn” back-to-school initiative held its second annual event Saturday, 24 August, to give out school supplies ahead of the new academic year. Under the umbrella of The Lloyd Barker Foundation, which also sponsors the Pursuit of Excellence Awards for high schoolers, 30 volunteers handed out supplies to 270 students at Constitution Hall in George Town.

Noting that some families encounter difficulties in supplying everything students need for school, the foundation said in a press release, “As a result, the Pursuit of Excellence team requested and obtained monetary and non-monetary support of individuals and companies locally and overseas to help with bridging the gap and preparing our students for the new academic year.”

In addition to giving out items such as school bags, composition books, pencils, crayons, calculators and geometry sets, the event featured free haircuts; face painting; colouring; light refreshments; surprise giveaways; a special performance by local dance group, Frvs Squad; and a brief speech of encouragement by reigning Miss World Cayman Islands, Kelsie Woodman-Bodden.

Last year the foundation presented supplies to 217 students, with founder Lloyd Barker saying he was “delighted” the second event was a success. “It was a blessing to help so many students and families for such a worthy purpose,” Barker said in the press release.

“The Pursuit of Excellence team delivered our best for the community. It is no easy project to bring to life, but the smiling faces and words of appreciation brightened our day. Knowing the students are that much more prepared is truly gratifying for the entire Pursuit of Excellence team.”

During the event, Barker briefly addressed participants, encouraging the parents and guardians to continue guiding and supporting their children, especially in their academic pursuits. He also commended them for attending the event to ensure their children are fully equipped for the new school year.
