Optimists promote childhood cancer awareness
(CNS Local Life): St Ignatius School student Erika Sobers has designed a T-shirt that is being used to raise awareness of childhood cancer. Organised by the Optimist Club of Grand Cayman, the initiative is raising funds through sales of the shirts. The student recently presented the first T-shirt to Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, who described it as “very creative”.
Emblazoned on the back of the shirt are three stylised turtles within a circle embellished by golden yellow pinstripes, since gold is the colour of childhood cancer advocacy, stated a press release.
Sobers explained the three turtles not only represent the Cayman Islands’ connection to turtles but the number also depicts the three islands comprising Cayman that are “united in the fight against childhood cancer”.
The T-shirts are available at $20 for adults and $15 children. Optimist Club of Grand Cayman president Elaine Harris added the organisation has identified two recently diagnosed children in need of funding locally.
Harris said anyone who wants to learn more about the club, donate to the cause or order a T-shirt can email the Optimist Club.
“Optimist is a service organisation geared to providing hope and positive vision, and focused on bringing out the best in youth, our communities and ourselves,” she added.
