(CNS Local Life): One Dog at a Time (ODAAT), the local charity that works to rescue stray and unwanted dogs on the island, has a wide variety of events planned in upcoming months to raise money to expand their operation. ODAAT president Paula Blane said of the efforts to build the charity, “To increase the number of dogs we rescue, we are now seeking premises in which to have a permanently set up shop, additional kennels for rescue dogs and an exercise space.”

Towards that goal, she added, “If anyone has a suitable building that we can rent, or lease to buy, please contact us at info@odaat.ky.”

The fundraising activities begin this weekend, with a garage sale Saturday, 10 March, at 30 Beacon Point, South Church Street, from 6am to 10am. The following day St Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine will be running an ice cream stand at Public Beach by Calico Jack’s, starting at 11am. All proceeds from donations in exchange for ice cream will go toward a variety of local animal charities, including ODAAT.

On Sunday, 20 May, local business 3 Girls and a Kiln will be hosting an opportunity for people to paint an acrylic “pawtrait” of their pet.  Ahead of the event, those taking part can submit a photo of their pet and the company’s artists will sketch the image onto canvas in preparation for painting. The $70 ticket includes the canvas, paint, snacks and a drink. More details will be announced closer to the date.

Then a catamaran trip taking in Stingray City, snorkelling at Coral Gardens, and Starfish Point is planned for Sunday, 3 June. Cost of the trip will be $40 for adults with children’s tickets dependent on age.

In addition, ODAAT is looking for a forever home for Hooch, described as a “gentle giant who loves children, adults and other dogs”. The canine is living in a foster home and “fully participating in family activities”. He has just finished his second course of heartworm treatment and is due to have a retest in a few weeks’ time. To meet Hooch, email ODAAT.
