Minister’s message for World Teachers’ Day
Minister for Education Juliana O’Connor-Connolly writes: As Minister for Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture, and Lands, I am cognisant of how imperative teachers are in every one of the subject areas I oversee. Without teachers, there would be no other professions. Every industry needs a teacher and today we pause globally to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2018 and appreciate the educators’ contributions!
As a government, we want to recognise the intricate role teachers play in the advancement of our society. Educators help develop whole beings and make an enormous impact on individuals’ lives daily.
UNESCO reminds us that this also marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) that recognizes education as a key fundamental right and establishes an entitlement to free compulsory education, ensuring inclusive and equitable access for all children.
This year’s global theme is the “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher” and was chosen to highlight that without qualified teachers, education for all cannot be achieved. Even today, a continuing challenge worldwide is the shortage of teachers, and Caymanian teachers make a minority of our country’s teaching population.
Teaching is a most honourable vocation; and our country needs to work together to elevate the status of this noble profession. Our youth should be encouraged, supported, and praised when showing a keen desire for education. It has been said that, “It is noble to teach oneself, but still nobler to teach others.”
As a country, we all have a stake to play in the education system. I applaud all the educators and all who work within our education system for taking a vested interest in the success of our country.
Jesus, Himself, was a teacher, of the 90 times Jesus was addressed directly in the gospels; 60 times he was called Teacher. Every educator today should feel an immense sense of pride to be part of a select group of individuals who share their God-given talents and impart the insight needed to develop children in a way that cultivates a passion for life-long learning.
On behalf of the Cayman Islands Government and my Ministry team, thank you today and always.
Have a Blessed World Teachers’ Day.

Most of this is gibberish and random platitudes mashed together. You should post it in the headlines so it will receive the attention it deserves. It’s really a shame to see this sort of writing rom a minister of education.
