Telecoms firm dials up help for Dominica
(CNS): Cable & Wireless Communications has set up a regional fundraising mechanism to aid the island of Dominica, which was devastated by the recent passage of Tropical Storm Erika. Across the Caribbean and the Bahamas, customers can text the word “HELP” to donate funds to the relief initiative. In Cayman, each text to 4357 will donate CI$1 to the fund.
All proceeds will be donated to the government of Dominica’s disaster-relief efforts.
In a letter to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt, John Reid, president, C&W consumer group, said he extended “heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the entire Cable & Wireless team across the region, and reaffirmed support for the people of Dominica in the recovery effort”.
In Dominica, the company also offered $5 free credit to all prepaid customers on the network to facilitate contact with family members and friends. Across the Caribbean, both Flow and LIME teams have initiated other relief efforts to support the storm-affected island, including a shipment of polos and T-shirts from Cayman.
Jeffrey Baptiste, general manager of Cable & Wireless in Dominica, mobilised resources from that country and other markets as soon as the storm abated. Since then, the company’s technicians have been working around the clock to expedite the restoration of full communications service – mobile, fixed and internet.
Reid added, “We stand as partners in the recovery process and remain committed to working with the government of Dominica to restore the island to a state of normalcy within the shortest possible timeframe.”
