Community group handing out free alarms
(CNS Local Life): A local community organisation is giving away free window and door alarms to every home in the Prospect and Red Bay area. The Prospect Red Bay Community Group used the money its Community Emergency Response Team won for taking first place in the 2017 CERT Challenge to provide a siren system for the community.
The giveaway takes place Wednesday and Thursday, 21 and 22 November, from 6pm-8pm at the Seafarers Hall on Victory Avenue. To receive an alarm, residents are asked to bring a current utility bill in their name or their voter ID to confirm they live in the area. In addition to the alarms, residents will also receive free neighbourhood watch window decals.
“When we won the CERT Challenge and realised we had $6,000 to spend we wanted to use the funds to do something positive for as many people in our community as possible,” explained Sabrina Turner, the group’s executive committee chairperson, in a press release.
“We decided on the alarms because they can be placed on any window or door in the home and they add another level of security and awareness to our existing neighbourhood watch.”
While being light and compact in size, the alarms have a piercing 120 decibel siren which is loud enough to call attention in a variety of situations. They can be installed to any surface in seconds and no tools are required.
“The catchment area for our group begins from Selkirk Avenue and extends to the Flow telephone exchange in Spotts, on both the land and sea side,” said Turner. “We are very excited about the giveaway and look forward to receiving a great response from residents that are able to come to the Seafarers Hall.”
The group will also be organising delivery of the alarms to senior citizens who are unable to get to the hall.
“On behalf of our group I would like to say thank you to Hazard Management Cayman Islands and the Cayman Islands Red Cross for hosting the CERT Challenge which made this all possible,” Turner added.
