CIFEC students earn certifications
(CNS): Students of the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) have completed the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) training courses in basic food hygiene and cosmetology. The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman sponsored the training for 50 participants. To date, 44 students have taken advantage of this opportunity, with the remaining six participants scheduled for training in the near future.
Environmental Health officers Gideon Simms and Derrick Williams facilitated the training, which took place on 7 and 14 April. The certification earned from the courses is valid for three years and is a requirement for workers in the food and beverage, and cosmetology industries.
“The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman was delighted to provide this training to the students of CIFEC, who will utilise the knowledge gained to either follow their career paths or to improve safety in their day-to day lives,” said Rotarian and Director of Environmental Health Roydell Carter.
Some of the students will be applying for jobs in the hospitality and related industries.
“The basic food hygiene course provides food handlers with the latest information on a wide range of food hygiene topics, while the main objectives of the cosmetology training are to ensure that industry operators are aware of the acceptable sanitation standards and that clients are not exposed to germs and bacteria that may cause health problems,” added Carter.
The career services team at CIFEC coordinated the sessions and, according to career advisor Jenine Stewart, most of the participants are studying health and social care, hair and beauty, and hospitality.
The information provided during training is particularly beneficial to the students as, in a few months, they will be graduating and many will be seeking employment in these fields.
Heather-Ann Cahill, manager of career services, thanked the facilitators, DEH and the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman for training and supporting the young people. She added there are plans to run another course for the remaining six places.
