Museum unveils commemorative book
(CNS): The Cayman Islands National Museum continued celebrations of its 25th anniversary by launching a commemorative book at an evening reception on International Museum Day, 18 May 2016. Entitled “Twenty Five Years Piece by Piece”, the book highlights the museum’s founders, donors and supporters, and especially the artefacts featured in the current exhibition of the same name.
“This celebration is a chance for us to reflect on the history and achievements of the museum. We house and preserve up to 9,000 items. They are vast in scope, from tiny shells to a 20-foot boat,” said Debra Barnes-Tabora, museum curation and collections manager.
She added that the items in the exhibition and the book, which is available at the museum shop for $16, “offer a direct connection to the Cayman Islands’ past. We want people to come out and enjoy it, and take ownership of that”.
Museum director Dr Peggy Leshikar-Denton welcomed government officials, museum staff and supporters to the event. At the reception, Premier Alden McLaughlin accepted a coil of silver thatch rope, as symbolic rent for the Old Courts Building, which houses the museum, from board chairman Alfonso Wright.
The premier was the first person to receive a copy of the commemorative book, which was also presented to various sponsors and supporters.
