Equestrian school celebrates Christmas in January
(CNS Local Life): Cayman Riding School held its annual Christmas Horse Show, Sunday, 8 January, after the rush of the holiday season, enabling organisers to take advantage of recycled Christmas trees. Owner and riding instructor Tracey Surrey said the timing gave the school the “chance to recycle approximately 50 ‘natural’ Christmas trees… to create our ‘winter wonderland’ ” for the competition arena.
The trees were donated by clients as well as residents of Savannah, where the school is located, a press release said.
“Once we have finished with the trees we deliver them to the recycling programme run by the Department of Environmental Health – so the trees really are put to good use before being turned into mulch,” Surrey added.
Describing the competition as “more for fun than serious” she said it was “a very long day as we offer classes for riders of all abilities”.
The more than 60 riders who participated included some as young as 4 years old along with experienced equestrians who compete on a regular basis.
The day started with a traditional fancy dress class, followed by several “handy pony” classes, where children and their rides negotiated an obstacle course, putting into practice all they had learnt during lessons. The difficulty of the obstacle course was commensurate with the ability of the rider.
The afternoon session consisted of showjumping for the more experienced riders and attracted a record number of entries.
The next show, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Sunday, 12 February.
