(CNS): Nominations for the Young Caymanian Leadership Awards (YCLA) are now open for 2016. The YCLA, now in its 16th year, was created to identify and honour young leaders who serve as role models for the youth of Cayman. Nominations may be made by any organisation, business or individual in the community.

Candidates for the YCLA must be Caymanians between 20 and 35 years old who demonstrate strong leadership ability, outstanding moral character, personal and professional achievement, and community involvement.

The nominees must also display a firm commitment to mentoring young people.

Last year, the YCLA received a record 39 nominations which organisers, the Young Caymanian Leadership Foundation, said in a press release demonstrates the programme “has truly been embraced by the community and that the award carries with it a significant level of honour and prestige”.

Jonathan Tibbetts, YCLA board member and chairman of the nominations committee, said, “In today’s world, more than ever, our young people need role models, people not much older than themselves, with whom they can identify, and by whom they can feel inspired.

“The YCLA shines a spotlight on these great role models, who give generously of their time to touch the lives of so many young people in need of answers and positive direction. We look forward to receiving the nominations for this year’s award, and we thank the community in advance for helping us to identify the candidates. Together we are building a stronger community.”

The YCLA 2015 award recipient, Kellie Sandy (nee McGee), has already addressed thousands of students in all three islands during the first five months of her tenure. Fulfilling her mission as a role model, mentor and youth ambassador, she has been sharing her story and inspiring students with her positive messages and advice.

She is also encouraging adults to become mentors to young people in their lives. Regular updates on her activities can be found on the YCLA Facebook page.
