Pirates Week drops anchor in Grand Cayman
(CNS Local Life): The 39th Pirates Week festival kicked off in Grand Cayman under the theme, “Age of Romance”, Thursday, 10 November with the “Pan in de City” steel pan competition and showcase on the waterfront. Events set for today (Friday, 11 November) include a 5K walk/run, Festival Queen competition, street dance and fireworks. As usual, the “pirate invasion” will take place the following day at Hog Sty Bay.
Traditionally, boats loaded with pirates come ashore and “capture” the island’s governor, “taking over” the islands for an entire week before being “kicked off'”once again.
Other activities set for the festival on Grand Cayman, which concludes Sunday, 20 November with the 10K “To Hell and Back” run/walk, include heritage days at each district, swim meets, Pirate Pooch Parade and the cardboard boat race.
The festival continues on Cayman Brac, with events planned 25-27 November. Little Cayman began the festivities this year, with a celebration from 4-6 November that included a dance, float parade and fireworks.
