Cayman Prep late winner over CIS
(PFL): Under threatening skies and through periods of cooling rains, second round games in the 2018 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and CUC Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL) regular seasons were played Saturday, 6 October. In Group B at the Dart Field, the Under 11 boys from Cayman Prep snatched a late 1-0 victory against their private school rivals Cayman International School (CIS) Blue in a very entertaining game.
Followers of the CUC PFL are accustomed to Cayman Prep’s recent dominance in the league and opening rallies and although they play a neat, disciplined style of football, when tested, they can still grind out a victory through grit and determination.
Throughout the game, CIS Blue’s disciplined defence kept the prolific Cayman Prep offence at bay and when the always-dangerous Jaxon Cover did break free, he found the opposition’s post and crossbar his only obstacle in securing a lead. CIS kept working hard in the midfield but they were unable to significantly trouble the Prep goal apart from a few shots which lacked any power.
The game seemed destined for a draw, which would definitely have pleased the CIS Blue contingent until Cover found space in the opposition’s box to power home the winner late in the game. An obviously dejected CIS Blue team soldiered on in search of the equaliser but it was not to be.
In the Under 9 division in Group A, Truth For Youth secured their first win of the young season with a 1-0 victory over CIS White thanks to Danny Rankine’s first -strike.
In other CUC PFL Group B games it was Cayman Prep A 4 vs Cayman International School Blue 2 (Under 11); Red Bay Primary 3 vs NorthEast Schools 1 (Under 9); Red Bay Primary 4 vs NorthEast Schools 0 (respect rule – Under 11); and Triple C 4 vs Cayman Brac 0 (respect rule – Under 11) .
In other Group A games, it was Savannah Primary 4 vs Sir John A. Cumber Primary 0 (respect rule – Under 9); Savannah Primary 0 vs Sir John A. Cumber Primary 1 (Under 11); St Ignatius Catholic 3 vs George Town Primary 0 (Under 9); and St Ignatius Catholic 4 vs George Town Primary 0 (respect rule – Under 11).
The CUC GPFL Under 9 League kicked off this past Saturday with a number of games between CIS and Cayman Prep. These 5v5 non-competitive games have been designed to introduce football to young ladies to assist with their development and prepare them for the CUC GPFL Under 11 league. All games this season will be played at the Cayman Prep School on Smith Road beginning at 8am. The intention is to include as many schools as possible over the next few seasons.
In the only CUC GPFL Under 11 game played, it was St Ignatius Catholic 3 vs George Town Primary 0.
The 2018 CUC PFL and GPFL regular season continues Saturday, 13 October with games at the Annex Field, St Ignatius, Dart Field, Ronald Forbes Field and the West Bay Town Hall Field.
