Why can’t you recycle at the airport?
I asked one of the cleaners at the airport where I should put my soda can and was told to put it in the garbage. Why are there no recycling points at the airport?
Auntie’s answer: I must admit I was taken aback by this question, as it didn’t seem possible that a freshly renovated airport would not be rendered green at the same time. I contacted the Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) and, for the moment, there indeed isn’t any place at Owen Roberts to recycle.
However, an official confirmed that the CIAA is planning to launch a “new environmental programme at the airport” which will be implemented in phases starting this summer. The programme will include energy conservation and renewable energy measures to address noise pollution and reduce its carbon footprint, and recycling.
I do not have any more details to share, but I certainly hope that at the very least recycling bins are rolled out as part of the first green phase.

Most certainly the CIAA will need an addition KY$10,000,000.00 to implement the extremely technical recycling program at the airport.
It’s probably the same reason truck load after truck load of plant material ends up in the dump (ie it’s in the too hard basket for those in charge). I was at the dump a couple of weeks ago and at least 6 trucks full of palm branches, leaves and grass clippings were unloaded in the time it took me to unload my truck load of old sheetrock from my renovation project.
The airport was built with 1980’s in mind…
