Who is the actor in film about Long Celia?

| 28/08/2019

I recently visited the Cayman Islands National Museum. It was very interesting and lovely. I was just wondering if you knew the name of the actor who played opposite Long Celia in the video? She looks familiar but I can’t remember her name.

Ask Auntie, CNS Local Life, Caymanian status

Auntie’s answer: The woman in question is Cynthia Hew, who played Sarah Harbourn in the film. I am sure she looks familiar as she is well known in Cayman, having been a newsreader on Cayman 27. She is also a sponsor of the Cayman Cookout and involved in various charities, as well as being married to Minister Joey Hew.

For a bit more information on the film, it was written, directed and cast by Nasaria Chollette, who was the museum’s education coordinator at the time it was made in 2009 for the reopening of the facility five years after Hurricane Ivan hit. Ms Chollette also designed the costumes for the production.

Shanek Conolly played Long Celia, a slave who went to trial in 1820 for inciting rebellion after hearing that slaves were to be freed and asking Harbourn about it. Harbourn testified against her, and Long Celia was found guilty and sentenced to 50 lashes.

Rita Estevanovich, an award-winning Caymanian actor, narrated the film.

The Cayman Islands National Museum is open Monday-Friday, from 9am-5pm and on Saturday from 10am-2pm.
