(CNS Local Life): Toastmaster Sashoy Duncan, Area Director of Toastmasters International responsible (TMI) for three of the six TM clubs in the Cayman Islands and one in Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), has earned the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Award. This recognition is the greatest honor that can be attained by a member of TMI, only given to those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and communication skills and who have used these skills to embolden others in their self-development efforts. Duncan is the fifth Distinguished Toastmaster in the Cayman Islands.

Duncan joined TMI in 2016 and has since completed projects of progressive complexity, earning various awards to reach the DTM status. She is a member of the Eminent Orators TM Club and has served in various offices, most recently being the Club President for the 2018-2019 TM Year.

She currently serves as the Area Director of District 81, Division B, Area 15, where she is responsible for the TCI TM Club, the sole Toastmasters Club in TCI, as well as three clubs in the Cayman Islands: the Eloquent Speakers TM Club in Savannah, EY TM Club in Camana Bay and Grand Cayman TM Club in George Town. She has conducted training sessions and leadership workshops in both islands as she helps others to envisage their true potential.

Duncan represented the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Toastmasters International District 81 Competitions held in Bonaire during their Annual Conference in May 2019. She was among seven competitors from Puerto Rico, Barbados, Bonaire, Guyana, Aruba, Haiti and Jamaica and at the end was awarded second place in the Table Topics Speech Contest and third in the Evaluation Speech Contest.

She also chaired the 2018 ‘Test the Waters’ Public Speaking Benefit Event in the Cayman Islands, which saw numerous Toastmasters and guests coming together for an evening of public speaking, humour and entertainment.

Duncan said, “I am grateful and humbled by this accomplishment and I do believe it will serve as an inspiration to many Toastmasters and prospective Toastmasters.”

There are six Toastmasters clubs in the Cayman Islands, two of which are corporate clubs, all geared towards enriching our society with ‘better speakers, better listeners and better thinkers’.
