My family will be coming to visit Grand Cayman soon. I am wondering if I can drive there using my US driver’s license?

Auntie’s answer: You are not allowed to drive with only your foreign licence; you are required to get a visitor’s permit before taking a car out on the road here. But the good news is that it is a relatively painless process.

If you will be hiring a car to use here, the rental agency will be able to issue you with a visitor’s driving permit, which usually costs about US$20.

If you will be staying with friends or family and borrowing a private car while here, you are still required to get the permit, but you will have to go through the Department of Vehicle and Driver’s Licensing (DVDL). The cost there is the same, at CI$16.

The department has several locations in Grand Cayman, but unfortunately none is by the airport. And be sure you bring your US licence, plus your passport and the white immigration card you were given on arrival. You might also want to bring along a good book in case the office is busy. For more information on the process, here is a link to the DVDL website.

(In case you’re wondering, as this is a British territory, ‘licence’ is spelled with two C’s.)
