Why are security guards directing traffic?

| 25/06/2018

I would like to know why there are two security guards stopping cars at the entrance to the Royal Palms where the new tunnel is being built so that vehicles coming out of there can get on to West Bay Road? Last week I was forced to stop so that the guard could let out a taxi with passengers and today I was forced to stop so a work truck could exit. I understand common courtesy and I am all about that but who said that they could do this? I don’t believe this is right.

Auntie’s answer: Actually, the guards are allowed to direct traffic at that entrance. An RCIPS spokesperson explained that they are authorised under The Traffic Law, 2011, to control the traffic and they are “there lawfully and executing their duties”.

The relevant section in the law is 117, which addresses road works over, along or across a road and how affected traffic should be regulated. Specific to your concerns about the security guards controlling the vehicles exiting Royal Palms, Section 117(3) says in part, “A person who, on approaching road works…does not obey all directional signals and signs, whether verbal, manual or automated, given to him by…a person authorised to man such place” commits an offence.

The law mentioned in this column can be found on the CNS Library

Oh well it looks like I’ve been breaking the law then! If it’s pedestrians I stop but when they let the taxi’s out I try & drive passed.
Still they should be gone by now & they can go stop traffic at the Strand or Galleria Plaza as same difference to what they are doing.

I’d like to know why they are forced to stand in the elements, rain or shine, 12,16 and 18 hours a day? I understand that their umbrellas were donated by Royal Palms and not their employer. This, my friends, is cruel and inhumane treatment.

I saw those two jokers as well giving conflicting directions which almost caused a pedestrian to be mowed over.

They don’t do a very good job of directing traffic. In fact they quite often cause near accidents with their methods. And If they have to jump out and then start waving in front of dangerously close traffic, they should also try give us warning. How about a freaking stop and go sign for each of them and train them how to actually safely control and direct traffic. They’re going to cause an accident mark my words.

Nope those aren’t Dart Boys….got a better one yet, Police pull over a car on Crew Road and a civilian was conducting traffic, a woman at that…you usually see her riding a bicycle….did a better job than the police lol lol
