A month ago, Foster’s Food Fair gave me a recycling box (kudos to FFF) which I have since been using to throw out my cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminium. I dutifully bring the items in the box to the proper recycling bins by Kirk supermarket. Recently someone told me it’s pointless to recycle here because it all goes into the same pile in the landfill. Is that true and I am wasting my time trying to recycle?

Auntie’s answer: No, you are not wasting your time. Every so often I get a reader questioning whether recycling actual takes place in Cayman. A few months ago, I outlined Department of Environmental Health (DEH) recycling efforts as well as suggestions for reusing and reducing waste (see Concerned about recent recycling efforts).

As before, I can also point you to a list on the DEH website of recyclable materials and the locations of depots containing recycling bins. I understand people being cynical because once someone throws the items into a bin, there is no way to know what happens next. But I am assured that DEH continues to recycle what they collect.

While more can certainly be done, including increasing education and awareness of the importance of recycling, I do believe every little bit helps. And that is why my family continues to separate paper, plastic and glass and carry those to the receptacles at one or another of the supermarkets when the pile gets too large at home.

Doing something is definitely better than doing nothing.
