Women win again in beach volleyball
(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s women’s beach volleyball duo of Marissa Harrison and Ileann Powery won matches two days in a row at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Barranquilla, Columbia. A day after a victory against St Lucia, Cayman beat Suriname in three sets.
Harrison and Powery won the first set 21-12, but Suriname proved to be a difficult opponent, and took the second set 21-11. During the third and final set, Harrison and Powery were able to eke out a small lead which they maintained to the end, to claim a 15-11 victory over Suriname.
Meanwhile, the men’s team continued to endure intense pressure. Casey Santamaria and Nathan Dack lost to their Honduran counterparts 12-21 and a closer 18-21. Neither the women nor the men will be playing for medals but will continue to compete to determine their final placings.
In athletics, Cayman’s Lacee Barnes placed eighth out of 12 competitors in the women’s discus with a throw of 46.25 metres. Barnes is the current national record holder for that event after hitting 47.63 metres at the CARIFTA games in April 2017.
Cayman’s sole remaining athlete to appear is national javelin record holder Alex Pascal, who is slated to compete today (2 August).
The CAC Games end Friday, 3 August.
