(CNS): The ninth annual Breeze Fusion three-mile walk/run is set for 6:30am Saturday, 7 November. This family-friendly event is a fundraiser for the National Council of Voluntary Organisations, with the second charitable recipient Meals on Wheels. Starting at Smith’s Cove, the course runs through the residential neighbourhoods of South Church Street, Melmac Avenue, Walkers Road and South Sound.

First held in 2007, the walk/run is now a highly anticipated calendar event for amateurs and pros alike, welcoming pram pushers and even holding a “kiddie’s race” for children ages six and under. The three-mile race will be followed immediately by the much-shorter children’s event and then the overall awards presentation.

Expected to take part are running-circuit regulars including Dominic Corbin, Scott Ruby, the Magalhaes family and Jason Saunders, who is quickly returning to form after injuries in a bike accident more than a year ago. The 2014 top overall male and female runners, Bruce Mangacam and Joanna Mansy, are also expected to defend their titles.

Once again, this year’s patron is Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, who has become a familiar presence in distance races, as he encourages civil servants and members of the community to become more active and supportive of charitable events.

The event is organised by Radio Cayman/Breeze FM and the Phoenix Athletic Club, with timing by Derek Larner’s Race Caribbean.

The first 200 entrants get an event T-shirt and, along with all other participants, a medal and goodie bag. Trophies go to the first overall male and female finishers in the run, with medals and prizes to the top competitors in each age category for both the run and walk. There will also be random prizes.

Since the inception of the event, ROMA United Sports Club has been a steady supporter, combined over the years with Cayman National, Maedac/WATA and Lee’s Office Products. They are joined this year by Ogier, Island Taste, Swiss & Global, Seaboard Marine, Bodden Corporate, Cayman Weekly, Carlos & Martin’s Tex Mex Cantina and Car City.

Registration costs $20 for adults and $10 for students under 16. To sign up, go to the Cayman Active  website.
