Cayman’s medal count rises at Special Olympics
(CNS Local Life): Cayman’s Special Olympians continued to make a mark at the World Games in Abu Dhabi, with Alec Cox swimming to gold and the unified basketball team clinching a spot in the gold medal game against India set for Wednesday, 20 March, the last day of competition.
Cox took the gold in the 800m freestyle swim with a time of 14:58.03. Dayana Powery earned her third medal with a second-place finish in the 100m freestyle in 1:37.01.
Rasheed Lawrence and Kanza Bodden moved from open water to the pool, with Lawrence notching fifth place in the 800m freestyle in 13:59.74 and Bodden placing seventh at the same distance, clocking 22:19.82.
The unified basketball team knocked off Namibia 21-16 to secure their place in the gold medal game.
In track and field, Jordan McLean earned his first medal of the Games, taking bronze in the 100m run, with a time of 13.51.
Next up for the swimmers on Wednesday is the 4x50m freestyle relay with Cox, Powery, Matthew Javier and Keanu McKenzie, and Anechell Newman will be competing in the 50m backstroke.
On the track, Jaheim Ebanks and Matthew Ebanks will both be aiming for their second gold medals in Abu Dhabi in the 800m run, with Beaver Smith (who has bronze in the 1500m) and Lewin Solomon, Jr (bronze in the 400m) also competing in that distance.
Later that day, Jaheim Ebanks, Smith, Matthew Ebanks and McLean will be running in the 4x100m relay.
In bocce, the unified doubles team of Khalid Arana and Nadesha Kelly will be taking on the US twosome in the medal round, after beating the Russian team on Tuesday.
To date, the Cayman Islands team has earned six gold, five silver and six bronze medals. The closing ceremony takes place Thursday, 21 March.
