Final day for Cayman’s swimmers at Pan Am Games
(CNS Local Life): Brett Fraser became Cayman’s first athlete at the 2019 Pan Am Games to qualify for a medal event Thursday (8 August), but fell short in the 100m freestyle final that evening. He said he was happy with both of his performances on the day and he’s ready to put in the necessary training to improve his time, after clocking 49.97 in the final. Both Fraser and Lauren Hew will be swimming in their last events of the Games today (Friday).
The 49.68 Fraser posted in his heat that morning, however, has already qualified him for the ‘B’ standard in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “It feels good to be at a place where I thought I would be and physically I think everything’s in place,” he said. “It’s just a matter of going back and really putting in the training that I know is necessary in order to, one, qualify for the A standard and, two, be competitive with the international scene of swimmers,” which he noted were “highly competitive”.
Hew was unable to qualify for the 100m freestyle final, also held Thursday evening, with a time of 1:01.38 in her heat.
Fraser and Hew will be back in the pool today for their 50m freestyle heats.
Over in Paracas Bay, Peru, a four-hour drive south of the main Games venue in Lima, sailor Jesse Jackson has completed his 10 races in the laser standard event, with two more on Thursday, and will not be participating in Friday’s finals.
