(CNS): The Bakertilly Corporate Squash League hit the ground running last Thursday at the South Sound Squash Club, with the teams coming out swinging, organisers said. With a change in match play, where teams now ratchet up scores from points gained by individual players rather than for winning games, the league become more exciting and competitive as every point counts.

This was illustrated by the B Division match-up between Walkers and Scott’s Equipment.

The recruited junior player, Pierce Terry from Walkers, won the match on paper, but the individual scores in each game had the players ending up with the same number of points, in a game voted as match-up of the night. Jody Jervis of Scott’s Equipment put up a valiant fight, and while he lost the battle he won the war for Scott’s Equipment.

Meanwhile, League sponsors, Bakertilly, faced off against last season’s winners, Grant Thornton, and pulled out an impressive match win that came down to the final game of the night being the decider between the two powerhouses. But PWC who have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, leading the first week with 135 points.

The scores after week one are:

  • PWC – 135
  • Scott’s Equipment – 126
  • Bakertilly – 110
  • Grant Thornton – 101
  • Walkers – 97
  • KPMG – 59
  • Bedel Cristin – Bye
