Brackers support DG’s 5K Challenge
(CNS): The Cayman Brac community turned out in force on Sunday, 17 April, to raise money for the 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge. Walkers and runners converged on Cayman Brac Museum in the early morning for the route which took the 168 participants to the Catboat Plaza and back.
Deputy Governor Franz Manderson led the event, with Premier Alden McLaughlin and Sister Islands MLA, Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell also taking part, as well as walkers and runners who travelled from Grand Cayman.
The team with the most participants was Faith Hospital with 33 members, scooping the grand prize of a $150 voucher for the recently refurbished Cayman Brac Reef Resort. The team from the district commissioner’s office, with 18 members, won the second prize, a $100 voucher to spend at the resort.
The fastest overall male runner on the day was Thomas Jackson, with Health Services Authority CEO Lizzette Yearwood the fastest female.
The 2016 DG’s 5K Challenge aims to raise $50,000 to help Cayman Heart Fund in its drive to buy a new ambulance for the people of the Cayman Islands.
“We had a fantastic day in the Brac and I thank everybody who came along to help make it such a great community event,” said Manderson. “This tremendous turn-out has really given us a great start to help us meet our target. The challenge is now to see as many people as possible take part in the event in Grand Cayman next week.”
Other participants included Chief Officer for District Administration, Tourism and Transport Stran Bodden; Chief Officer of Ministry of Health and Culture, and co-chair of the DG’s 5K Challenge Committee, Jennifer Ahearn; District Commissioner Ernie Scott; Deputy District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts; and the chairman of Cayman Heart Fund, David Dinner.
Registration for the Grand Cayman walk/run takes place in the Government Administration Building on Thursday and Friday, 21 and 22 April from 9am to 4pm. The entry fee is $20 for ages 14 and older and $10 for ages 13 and younger.
