After-school club promotes goodwill
(CNS Local Life): The Youth Services Unit’s (YSU) Financial Awareness Now (FAN) Club, an after-school programme at Clifton Hunter High School, is promoting fiscal awareness and Christmas cheer this year. The club, which is helping Year 7-11 students develop financial literacy and social responsibility, is producing handmade Christmas ornaments for a good cause. This latest initiative is enabling the young people gain first-hand experience of the principles involved in setting up a small business.
FAN Club members have made dozens of artisanal wooden decorations. The baubles will be sold to the Cayman Blood Donor Service to be given as gifts to donors.
Made from shamrock trees used in an earlier community service project, the ornaments are eco-friendly. “We wanted to create a cycle of giving,” said Camille Angel, the YSU advisor for the club.
“The students have used upcycled materials and hope they can pass on the spirit of giving to blood donors this holiday season.”
Speaking about the initiative, president of the donor group Carl Brown, said, “The Cayman Blood Donor Service and the National Blood Bank are indebted to the club’s youngsters for their hard work and for understanding the value of blood donation at this time of year.”
The FAN Club organises in-classroom forums, special field trips and guest speaker presentations from government, local businesses and financial institutions to make members financially savvy.
Since restarting this September, presentations have included the importance of saving and how to set up a bank account by Cayman National Bank; the taking up further education and obtaining a degree by the manager of the government’s Scholarship Secretariat; and the need for goal-setting by Clifton Hunter’s learning mentor Antoinette Parris-Hoyte.
