Miss Cayman Islands Monyque Brooks (front centre) joins walkers and runners from the civil service for the launch of Off the Couch

(CNS): Newly crowned Miss Cayman Islands Monyque Brooks put her best foot forward to help launch the Off the Couch fitness programme on Monday, 29 February. The eight-week initiative is to get people in shape for the 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge in April. Organised by the civil service GAB Walk Run Club, Off the Couch is suitable for all fitness levels of walkers and runners. Brooks joined Deputy Governor Franz Manderson for the launch at the staff entrance to the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, where the GAB Club meets every Monday.

As well as members of the civil service, walkers and runners from the private sector and general public are invited to join the Off the Couch programme. Both Brooks and Manderson have benefitted from exercise routines to help them improve their health, and they invite others to do the same while raising funds for a good cause.

“I am delighted to be with the GAB Walk Run Club for the Off the Couch programme and encourage as many people as possible to join us and get fit for the DG’s 5K Challenge,” said Brooks, who works in the Department of Tourism.

The 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge is this year supporting Cayman Heart Fund’s appeal to buy a new ambulance for the Cayman Islands. The total target for the vehicle is $150,000 and the aim is to raise $50,000 through the 5K event.

Dates for the 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge are Sunday, 17 April on Cayman Brac and Sunday, 24 April on Grand Cayman. Registration details will be announced nearer the dates.
